IT'S AUTUMN CARNIVAL TIME
by Garry Robinson
Yes it's that time of the year again The Golden Slipper Carnival comes to life with the Pago Pago and the Magic Night, the Rosehill Guineas and of course the Golden Slipper. Millions of dollars in prizemoney is on offer and Australia's best thoroughbreds will compete.
For many punters this is one of just two occasions when they bet. The Best Horses, the Best Races and The Best jockeys, and of course, they hope for the Best Odds.
It's a confidence thing. There is TV coverage, supplements in the Newspapers and magazines and before long it has everybody talking. But is it the Best Time to Bet?
Winform has just released a series of "systems" based exclusively on Metropolitan racing. Apart from Sydney opens and welters etc. we found that in general our best results came from the sorts of Racing that is considered "unpredictable". In brief, we looked at restricted class racing which is the bread and butter for most owners.
Instead of looking for the winner, we looked at something else. We looked at what sort of horse wins this type of Racing in the Metropolitan areas of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Now sometimes this meant backing two or three horses in a race but our records show this is the way to make a profit.
Once upon a time it was considered that Melbourne horses should not be backed in Sydney nor Sydney horses in Melbourne. These days with trainers having stables in both States and track gallops available the "other" way around in each State, this no longer applies but there is still the age old conjecture about which State has the Best 2yos or 3yos etc.
This all comes together at Carnival time when we will get the answer. Once again, for many punters, betting is about backing their own opinion against the majority and reveling in the glory when they are right.
For us, it isn't about backing our opinion, it is about making money. If we can make just $100 per day, that is over $35,000 per year tax free and that's not to be scoffed at. If it means that we ignore all the glory and the glamour that is the Sydney Autumn Carnival then so be it.
This is the information age, and we are constantly scouring the information we have available, to produce successful betting strategies.
By all means, have a go at the glory. It's a glamorous sport and success is well rewarded but don't ignore the bread and butter races that make up the vast majority of our Racing. No millionaire owners there.
So for now let's watch and see. Sunline, Belle Esprit, Yell and Choisir. Tie The Knot, Northerly, Dash For Cash and co. These are just a few of the names we will hear headed for Group One glory.
It's great time of the year.
